Specialet undersøger de virksomme mekanismer og barrierer i det sociale arbejde med skolefravær i Aalborg Kommune samt hvordan kropslige tilgange indgår i praksis. Med afsæt i kritisk realisme og begreber fra Pierre Bourdieu (felt, habitus, kapital) og Chris Shilling (kropslig/embodied kapital) samt et empowerment-perspektiv belyser analysen, hvordan deltagelse og positionering påvirkes, og hvordan indsatser kan styrke børns handlemuligheder. Empirien bygger på kvalitative, semistrukturerede interviews med skolesocialrådgivere, trivselsmedarbejdere og andre fagpersoner med erfaring i fraværsindsatser samt en fysioterapeut; data blev rekrutteret via gatekeepere og analyseret tematisk, og eksisterende forskning inddrages som sekundær empiri. Fundene viser, at skolefravær er et komplekst, relationelt fænomen formet af strukturelle, organisatoriske og relationelle forhold. Tidlig identifikation, tillidsfulde relationer og tværprofessionelt samarbejde fremstår som centrale virksomme mekanismer, mens manglende systematik, organisatoriske siloer og tidspres udgør væsentlige barrierer for sammenhængende indsatser. Kropslige dimensioner er til stede i praksis, men primært implicitte og situationsbundne; informanterne beskriver kroppen som central for børns stress- og reguleringsudfordringer, og kropslige strategier anvendes ofte ad hoc og afhænger af den enkelte praktikers erfaring og habitus. Samtidig peger studiet på, at ydre regulering gennem sociale og organisatoriske indsatser hænger tæt sammen med barnets indre reguleringskapacitet, og at indsatser kan have begrænset effekt ved langvarig fysiologisk stress. Specialet argumenterer derfor for en mere systematisk, helhedsorienteret og kropsligt forankret tilgang, hvor organisatoriske, relationelle og fysiologiske dimensioner integreres i det tværprofessionelle sociale arbejde med skolefravær.
This thesis investigates the effective mechanisms and barriers within social work practices addressing school absenteeism in Aalborg Municipality, and examines how bodily approaches are incorporated into practice. Grounded in critical realism and drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of field, habitus and capital, together with Chris Shilling’s notion of embodied capital and an empowerment perspective, the analysis explores how participation and positioning are shaped and how interventions may strengthen children’s capabilities. The study is based on qualitative, semi-structured interviews with school social workers, well-being officers and other professionals experienced in absenteeism interventions, as well as a physiotherapist; participants were recruited through gatekeepers, data were thematically analyzed, and existing research was included as secondary material. Findings indicate that absenteeism is a complex, relational phenomenon shaped by structural, organizational and relational factors. Early identification, trusting relationships and interprofessional collaboration emerge as key supportive mechanisms, whereas lack of systematization, organizational silos and time constraints hinder coherent interventions. Bodily dimensions are present in practice but largely implicit and situational; informants describe the body as central to children’s stress responses and regulatory difficulties, and body-based strategies are often ad hoc and dependent on individual practitioners’ experience and habitus. The study further suggests a close interrelation between external regulation through social and organizational measures and the child’s internal regulatory capacity, and that interventions may be limited when prolonged physiological stress is present. It therefore argues for a more systematic, holistic and embodied approach that integrates organizational, relational and physiological dimensions in interprofessional social work on school absenteeism.
