Specialet undersøger, hvorfor det kan være vanskeligt for unge at vælge en videregående uddannelse, og stiller tre centrale spørgsmål: Hvad er de unge i tvivl om, og hvad lægger de selv vægt på i valget? Hvilke andre end den unge selv påvirker beslutningen? Og er der tegn på, at sociale vilkår i opvækst og omgivelser har betydning for uddannelsesvalget? Metodisk anvendes en biografisk tilgang med narrative interviews, analyseret i lyset af et aktør–struktur-perspektiv og teorier om ungdom, livsstil og identitet i et flydende, refleksivt og individualiseret samfund. Analysen præsenterer seks fortællinger (Anja, Brian, Cira, Dina, Emil og Fie) og diskuterer temaer som, at flere forhold skal passe sammen, at valget opleves som refleksivt og præget af høje forventninger, og at unge balancerer interesser, ønske om “noget med mennesker”, forestillinger om det gode job og indtjeningsmuligheder. Uddannelsesvalg behandles også som et livsstilsvalg knyttet til stræben efter lykke. Endvidere belyses betydningen af netværk og “de betydningsfulde andre” samt sociale vilkår, herunder gymnasiet som et naturligt næste skridt, sabbatår som nødvendighed og hvordan habitus og kulturelle erfaringer kan forme valg. The thesis examines why choosing a higher education is difficult for young people and asks three core questions: What are they uncertain about and what do they prioritize in their choices? Who, beyond the young person themselves, influences the decision? And are there signs that social conditions in upbringing and surroundings affect educational choice?
