Resumé
Specialet undersøger, hvordan steders symbolske fortællinger fungerer som mekanismer for social differentiering. Med udgangspunkt i Aalborg gennemføres et kvalitativt casestudie af tre kvarterer – Østre Havn, Gug og Danmarksgadekvarteret – baseret på 20 semistrukturerede interviews med beboere. Teoretisk tager undersøgelsen afsæt i Pierre Bourdieus begreber om socialt hierarki, kapitalformer, habitus samt smag og afsmag, suppleret af bysociologisk forskning. Analysen belyser, hvordan beboere og lokale aktører knytter bestemte kvaliteter, værdier og livsformer til deres kvarter, og hvordan sådanne fortællinger konstrueres og reproduceres på tværs af skalaer fra by til nabolag. Temaer som familieliv og skole som social markør, nyudviklede waterfront-miljøer, kulturel kapital, historiske lag, tryghed og mangfoldighed indgår i casene og viser, hvordan konnotationer til steder kan blive symboler for status, tilhørsforhold og grænsedragninger mellem grupper. Specialet diskuterer, hvorfor den symbolske dimension kan være svær at italesætte, om skillelinjerne blot er et spørgsmål om klasse, samt hvordan aspirationer og legitimeringsstrategier kommer til udtryk, når mennesker fortæller om, hvor de bor. Undersøgelsen er udarbejdet i samarbejde med Aalborg Kommune og bidrager med et sociologisk blik på byens igangværende forandring fra industriby til kultur- og vidensby.
This thesis examines how symbolic narratives attached to places operate as mechanisms of social differentiation. Focusing on Aalborg, it employs a qualitative case study of three neighborhoods—Østre Havn, Gug, and the Danmarksgadekvarteret—based on 20 semi-structured interviews with residents. The analysis is anchored in Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts of social hierarchy, forms of capital, habitus, and taste and distaste, complemented by urban sociological research. It explores how residents and local actors attribute specific qualities, values, and lifestyles to their neighborhoods, and how such narratives are constructed and reproduced across scales from city to locale. Themes in the cases include family life and schooling as social markers, newly developed waterfront living, cultural capital, historical layers, safety, and diversity, illustrating how place associations become symbols of status, belonging, and boundaries between groups. The thesis discusses why the symbolic dimension can be difficult to articulate, whether these divides are simply about class, and how aspirations and strategies of legitimation emerge when people talk about where they live. Conducted in collaboration with Aalborg Municipality, the study offers a sociological perspective on the city’s ongoing shift from industrial to cultural and knowledge-based profiles.
