Dette speciale tager afsæt i den stigende mentale mistrivsel blandt unge i Danmark og i den politiske interesse for, at civilsamfundet kan supplere den offentlige indsats. Med udgangspunkt i headspace, et frivilligdrevet rådgivningstilbud for unge, undersøger vi, hvordan frivillige rådgivere i hovedstadsområdet forstår deres egen praksis og samspil med de unge brugere. Undersøgelsen bygger på syv kvalitative, semistrukturerede interviews, som er tematisk kodet i NVivo. Analysen består af to spor: Dels temaer, der udsprang direkte af data (atmosfære i samtalerummet, rolleforståelse, værdier og metoder, anerkendelse samt kollegial sparring), dels en teoretisk belysning af omsorg og emotioner med afsæt i Anders la Cours begreber om formel/uformel og professionel/frivillig omsorg samt Candace Clarks teori om emotionelle gaver, You First-strategien og venlighed. I diskussionen berøres, hvordan headspace som frivillig social praksis hjælper de unge, og hvilke unge der muligvis ikke fanges af tilbuddet. Specialet peger samlet på, at de frivilliges praksis er stærkt brugerfokuseret: De søger at skabe en tryg og behagelig atmosfære, møder de unge anerkendende og validerende, lader samtalen foregå på den unges præmisser, undlader at dømme, hjælper til refleksion og anvender følelsesmæssige strategier og omsorg.

This thesis addresses the rise in youth mental distress in Denmark and the growing policy interest in civil society’s role in complementing public services. Focusing on headspace, a volunteer-based youth counseling service, it examines how volunteer counselors in the Greater Copenhagen area understand their practice and interactions with young users. The study is based on seven qualitative, semi-structured interviews analyzed through thematic coding in NVivo. The analysis proceeds along two tracks: themes emerging directly from the data (the counseling room atmosphere, role perceptions, values and methods, recognition, and peer feedback) and a theory-informed reading of care and emotions drawing on Anders la Cour’s concepts of formal/informal and professional/volunteer care and Candace Clark’s theory of emotional gifts, the You First strategy, and niceness. The discussion considers how headspace as a volunteer social practice supports its users and which young people may not be reached. Overall, the thesis finds that volunteers’ practice is highly user-centered: they aim to ensure a safe and comfortable atmosphere, provide recognition and validation, keep conversations on the young person’s terms, avoid judgment, facilitate reflection, and apply emotional strategies and care.
