Abstract
This thesis investigates how political actors articulate discourses on green transitions within news media and how these discourses contribute to shaping public perceptions of environmental issues. Utilizing a discourse analytical approach informed by Laclau and Mouffe's theory, this study scrutinizes the interactions among politicians, the media, and the public, with particular emphasis on a significant windmill project in Denmark. The analysis exposes how economic rhetoric frequently secures a hegemonic position in media representations, despite existing tensions between diverse environmental imaginations and conservationist perspectives. This hegemony often overshadows more ecologically focused narratives that prioritize long-term environmental sustainability over immediate economic benefits. The research highlights that governmental portrayals of green transitions are seldom substantively challenged but are rather critiqued superficially, which stifles the development of alternative, potentially more sustainable policies. Such dynamics limit democratic engagement by reducing the space for a critical discourse that could lead to more comprehensive environmental strategies. This thesis argues that fostering a more responsible media coverage and political dialogue can encourage a more inclusive, less polarized debate about environmental policies. It underscores the importance of developing a democratic discourse that not only accommodates but also actively engages diverse viewpoints. This is particularly important for those advocating for deeper ecological considerations. Future research should delve into how citizens perceive these environmental discourses and engage with them, particularly through digital platforms that amplify diverse voices. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for advancing democratic processes that genuinely reflect public concerns and aspirations towards sustainable development. Overall, this study contributes to the fields of political communication and environmental discourse by elucidating how discourses on green transitions are constructed and negotiated in the public sphere. It suggests that a shift towards more integrative and democratically responsive environmental discourses could play a pivotal role in shaping sustainable policies that are both effective and widely supported.
