Abstract
This thesis examines memory and identity in a Danish football club founded by Turkish immi-grants, Vatanspor. Based on existing literature about immigrant football clubs and theories of memory and symbolic ethnicity, three semi-structured interviews were conducted. The chairman, a former coach, and a current player were interviewed and gave their perspective on how the Turkish heritage is displayed in the club today and how they would characterise the club’s identity in gen-eral. An analysis of the interviews showed that the club no longer functions as a community based on Turkish culture, but rather on a shared experience of feeling different as part of a minority. The Turkish heritage is still present in the name and club logo, but it no longer represents a direct link to the home country. For the current players it is a nostalgic representation of the founders and the work they put in the establishment of the club. The analysis also showed that a central part of the identity of the club is that they have do more than their Danish peers to obtain success and acknowledgement on and off the football field, because of their ethnic background.
