Abstract
What is the learning potential in a participatory design with particular emphasis on fanfiction? This thesis addresses the learning potential in working creatively with a fandom. It does so, by arguing that the terms learning, experience and fandom can be seen in relation to each other. I will argue that there is a learning potential in working creatively with a fandom and that it is possible to exploit some properties derived from that. Fandom is a participatory culture that works as a space and a culture where people are encouraged to write, make films, think critically and make thoughtful discussions about hegemonic culture. I will argue that these properties are essential in the modern day school and can only benefit our educational system. Through interviews with fanfiction writers and a workshop with school teachers, I have found out that there are indeed qualities from the world of fandom. These qualities can be transferred to a specific learning situation in the Danish educational system. The primary point is that by letting pupils work with subjects that they have a personally interest in and a passion for, the pupils will have a more positive experience, a greater motivation and therefore a better learning outcome.
