Abstract

This project has examined the temporary use as a tool in urban development. Through document analyses and interviews with users and city planners, it has been found that the background to temporary use can be a lack of economic funds and thereby an examination of other future uses. The character of the temporary use is affected by the number of users available, the criterions involved for choosing the users and surrounding agreements. The temporary use can entail an emancipatory feeling among the users, caused by the physical possibilities involved but also by a certain mindset. The temporary aspect can also lead to a feeling of instability among the users, as well as a feeling of being situated in a grey area, where it is difficult to find out what is permitted and what is not. It is also found, that the authenticity in a area can provide the temporary use with a certain characteristic, and at the same time, the temporary use can help support and create authenticity.
