Abstract

Background: Feminism has indeed affected the field of music therapy. The interest for this field started in the early 2000’s, and is still growing. I have always shown great interest in this subject, and since feminism in music therapy wasn’t introduced in my time of schooling, I wanted to further investigate this subject myself. I have a preference for interviews and stories told from relevant people, and therefore I wanted to interview someone who had missed feminism in their time of therapy, and one who worked with feminist music therapy. My research question ended up being “how has feminism affected music therapy and how can this be described through two interviews from both a therapist and a client, analyzed with thematic coding, according to an ethnographic inquiry?”. Methods: I did two semi-structured interviews - one with a music therapist, who in her own education, felt a lack of the feminist perspective. The other was with a music therapy teacher, who shares her experience in this field. Both participants were found online, one through a social media post by me, and the other by email directly. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed with thematic coding ethnographically. Main points were summarized and compared to each other. Results: Both participants share life experiences, of which some are from the late 1990’s and early 2000’s during their own time of music therapy education. Both participants had felt feminism was missing in the field of music therapy, and both participants seem to have a skeptical view on the psychodynamic method in music therapy. The music therapy teacher had various examples of feminist issues in both music therapy schooling and practice. The other participant had examples of feminism lacking in the therapy and in some exam-context included in the music therapy education, and also some other examples from other kinds of therapy. Conclusion: Both participants have a skeptical view on psychodynamic music therapy, and stresses the importance of acknowledging the impact by the society surrounding us. Further research could be rich from this point of view, and add to the growing feminist discussion on a world wide level.
