Under min fuldtidspraktik i musikterapi på Bispebjerg Hospital lagde jeg mærke til, at mit engagement over for forskellige klienter varierede. Det fik mig til at undersøge, om andre novice musikterapeuter oplever det samme, og hvilke forhold der påvirker deres engagement. Denne retrospektive kandidatafhandling undersøger, hvordan novice musikterapeuter (n=9) fra Aalborg Universitet, Danmark, oplever engagement og manglende engagement under deres første fuldtidspraktik i uddannelsens sidste år. Den besvarer tre spørgsmål: Hvor ofte føler de sig engagerede eller uengagerede i arbejdet med klienter? Hvilke faktorer påvirker disse følelser? Og hvordan opleves disse faktorer? Studiet anvender et mixed-methods, forklarende sekventielt design. Et par måneder efter praktikforløbene var afsluttet, udfyldte deltagerne et online spørgeskema (med både kvantitative og kvalitative spørgsmål) og deltog derefter i en fokusgruppe. De kvantitative data blev analyseret med beskrivende statistik, og de kvalitative data fra spørgeskema og fokusgruppe blev tematisk kodet. Fokusgruppen omfattede også kunstbaserede aktiviteter – musikalsk improvisation og tegning – for at uddybe refleksionerne; denne tilgang foreslås benævnt Music Therapy as Research. Overordnet rapporterede deltagerne, at de ofte følte sig engagerede i klientarbejdet og kun sjældent oplevede manglende engagement. Faktorer, der hang sammen med lavere engagement, omfattede praktikrammer, tværfagligt samarbejde, klienters adfærd, den novice musikterapeuts professionalisme samt egen trivsel. Faktorer, der hang sammen med højere engagement, var stort set de samme (dog ikke praktikrammer) og derudover den terapeutiske relation. Deltagerne oplevede, at faktorerne var tæt forbundne. Den musikterapeutiske relation blev set som en ressource, der kan afbøde forhold, som mindsker motivationen. I diskussionen sættes fundene i relation til teori om terapeutisk alliance (Hougaard, 2019), som peger på, at terapeutens engagement kan være en nødvendig komponent i opbygningen af alliancen, og de sammenlignes med forskning i psykoterapeuters udvikling (Orlinsky & Rønnestad, 2005). Afhandlingen peger på, at novice musikterapeuter ved Aalborg Universitet kan have gavn af flere redskaber til selvrefleksion under eller efter praktik samt træning i tværfagligt samarbejde.

During my full-time internship in music therapy at Bispebjerg Hospital, I noticed that my own engagement varied across clients. This observation led me to ask whether other novice music therapists feel the same, and which factors shape their engagement. This retrospective master’s thesis explores how novice music therapists (n=9) at Aalborg University, Denmark, experience engagement and lack of engagement during their first full-time internship in the final year of their program. It addresses three questions: How often do they feel engaged or disengaged with clients? Which factors influence these feelings? And how are these factors experienced? The study uses a mixed-method, explanatory sequential design. A few months after the internships ended, participants completed an online survey (with quantitative and qualitative items) and then took part in a focus group. Quantitative data were summarized with descriptive statistics, and qualitative data from the survey and focus group were thematically coded. The focus group also included art-based activities—musical improvisation and drawing—to deepen reflection; this approach is proposed as Music Therapy as Research. Overall, the participants reported often feeling engaged in their client work, and only rarely feeling a lack of engagement. Factors related to lower engagement included the internship framework, interdisciplinary collaboration, client behavior, the novice therapist’s professionalism, and personal well-being. Factors related to higher engagement were largely the same (except the internship framework) plus the therapeutic relationship. Participants experienced these factors as closely interconnected. The music therapeutic relationship was seen as a resource that can help counteract factors that reduce motivation. The discussion connects the findings to therapeutic alliance theory (Hougaard, 2019), indicating that therapist engagement may be a necessary element in building a therapeutic alliance, and compares them with research on psychotherapist development (Orlinsky & Rønnestad, 2005). The thesis suggests that novice music therapists at Aalborg University would benefit from more tools for self-reflection during or after internship and from training in interdisciplinary collaboration.
