Abstract
Afhandlingen undersøger, hvordan bedsteforældre og børnebørn holder kontakt over afstand. Det sker ved at designe, implementere og afprøve en "technology probe" (en udforskende teknologiprototype, som placeres i familiernes hjem for at lære om deres kommunikation i hverdagen). Prototypen blev først anvendt hos to familier i Australien. På den baggrund identificeres og diskuteres temaer, der er vigtige, når man designer teknologi til kommunikation mellem bedsteforældre og børnebørn, der bor hver for sig. This thesis examines how grandparents and grandchildren stay in touch over distance. It does so by designing, implementing, and testing a "technology probe" (an exploratory prototype placed in families' homes) to observe everyday communication. The probe was first deployed with two families in Australia. From this, the thesis identifies and discusses themes important for designing technology that supports communication between grandparents and grandchildren living apart. The probe was then used with families with grandparents in Australia and grandchildren in Denmark, and I analyzed how time zone differences affected their contact. The analysis draws on existing theories of time and events. Finally, the thesis discusses ways to design technology for communication between grandparents and grandchildren living in different time zones.
