Århus Kommune har store planer for fremtiden som hovedstad i Det østjyske Bybånd: 75.000 nye indbyggere, 50.000 nye boliger og arbejdspladser samt 10.000 nye studiepladser. Samtidig planlægges en ny letbane, der forbinder midtbyen med de nordlige forstæder. Dette afgangsprojekt undersøger og udfordrer kommunens vision om bæredygtig, stationsnær byudvikling, hvor letbanen tænkes som en drivkraft for byvækst. Projektet bygger på en teoretisk ramme om byudvikling og transport, som sætter Århus ind i en lokal, kommunal og regional sammenhæng. Det præsenteres gennem en overordnet strukturplan, der viser udviklingsmuligheder langs letbanens første etape, samt to designscenarier for nye bysamfund ved stationerne. Aarhus Municipality has ambitious plans for the future as the capital of the East Jutland Urban Belt: 75,000 new residents, 50,000 new homes and workplaces, and 10,000 new study places. At the same time, a new light rail is planned to connect the city center with the northern suburbs. This thesis examines and challenges the municipality’s vision of sustainable, station‑oriented urban development, with the light rail as a catalyst for growth. The project is built on a theoretical framework on urban development and transport that places Aarhus in local, municipal and regional contexts. It is presented through an overall structure plan that illustrates potential development along the first stage of the light rail, as well as two design scenarios for new communities at stations. The scenarios show how tools such as Transit Oriented Development (TOD—urban development centered on public transport), station proximity, and mixed land use can create compact, attractive and diverse urban environments—either as extensions of existing development or as new, independent neighborhoods. With these designs, the project asks whether such station‑focused building is realistic, what consequences it might have, and whether it is the best solution for Aarhus Municipality.
