This master’s thesis examines which psychological, biological, and cultural factors are associated with social media addiction (SMA) among young people in the USA and China. The starting point is that SMA is widespread in youth globally, while previous research has rarely integrated psychological, biological, and cultural perspectives across these two countries. Through a critical literature review, supported by meta-analyses, systematic reviews, survey research, and longitudinal studies, the thesis identifies and discusses key psychological factors such as Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), boredom, personality traits, self-esteem, and loneliness. The findings indicate that FOMO is the strongest and most consistent factor, and that boredom also plays a substantial role in both countries. In contrast, self-esteem and personality traits generally show only small or non-significant associations with SMA, and loneliness has only a weak association in the USA, while the limited data from China prevents firm conclusions. Additional psychological factors, including attachment styles, anxiety, depression, low psychological well-being, and impulsivity, also appear relevant, but are supported by a smaller evidence base. At the biological level, the results suggest that gender is important in the USA, where young women report higher levels of SMA than young men, whereas gender is not significant in China. Genetic factors, however, seem to play a major role in China, where heritability accounts for a large proportion of the variance in SMA; comparable genetic studies are lacking in the USA. At the cultural level, the Chinese value of guanxi is highlighted as a potential driver of SMA, while American youth are more strongly motivated to use social media by cultural ideals of self-realization and personal autonomy. The thesis further discusses whether and how SMA can be conceptualized as a behavioral addiction, current treatment approaches and suggestions for future interventions, as well as a possible qualitative research design. Overall, the thesis provides a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural understanding of why some young people in China and the USA develop social media addiction while others do not.
