Abstract
This study is a part of a master’s degree called Learning and Change Processes at Aalborg University. This study aims to answer the question: How can political discourses limit young non-Western people's possibility to environments where personal, social and learning development happens, like school context. The study focuses on an extract from a political speech held by the prime minister in 2020. In the speech young non- Western boys are mentioned and linked with disliked behavior such as criminal and violent acts. The research includes interviews with two social workers and two boys with non-western backgrounds. Through interviews my purpose is to gather personal narratives and from these get to know how informants react (either challenge or reproduce) and experience the broader discourse. The narratives I explore through my interviews are analyzed through theory which is mainly inspired by Michel Foucalt. In addition, theoretical terms concepts from Norman Fairclough and Chantal Mouffe & Ernesto Laclau are used to analyze the political speech and the informants' positioning within it. The findings show how professionals tend to internalize stereotype political beliefs. It also shows how professionals understand & deal with the existing political discourse and more clearly reveals a broader and more nuanced understanding compared to the chosen political speech. Finally, the studies show that non-western boys are aware of the discourse and the stereotypical ways of thinking in society. Their narratives show how they tend to position themself differently from the problematic subject position that the political expression offers. Even though they believe that they are not as society tends to describe they still show a little frustration toward stereotype telling`s as jokes. Their telling`s are in contrast with the findings I found through other studies which highlight the same research field. In the studies the people who are interviewed tend to position themself according to the main discourse by responding and developing specific behaviors. In conclusion, the study discusses how social workers can navigate in a reality where they are a part of a system where some minorities e.g. nonwestern boys are described in a stereotypical and often problematic way. The focus is on the social consequences if professionals fail to challenge and overcome the narrow perspective which is identified in the political discourse. My choice of subject and the research that the study is based on my personal background. It includes experiences with friends and overall young people who develop certain behaviors in certain circumstances. I am also inspired by other studies that I found through research on the main topic. These studies are listed in the section called `State of art`. Finally, the study describes its main points in an article for social workers, where the focus is to describe how they can position themselves in practice and why it's difficult to challenge dominant understandings.
