Abstract
This study explores scenarios and strategies for absolute sustainability in the building sector and built environment through sufficiency principles. It highlights the potential of sufficiency to support a transition toward a trajectory that operates within planetary boundaries. Using the case of Copenhagen, the research maps out the built environment and patterns by identifying existing practices and analysing development trends and future strategies. It discusses the urgent need for envisioning and identifying scenarios that enable operation within planetary boundaries. The study investigates how a sufficiency-based approach could support the emergence of a scenario in which building practices are envisioned, planned, and transformed according to the planetary limits. It calls for a shift in perspective and a critical revaluation of current practices and prevailing narratives and underscores the importance of policymaking in driving this transition. Niche ideas prove that alternatives exist and that they do not necessarily equal lowering quality of life, but often rather the opposite. Ultimately, the findings emphasise the necessity of a systemic transformation toward planetary politics in the way we plan and shape our cities.
