Abstract
Specialet undersøger, hvordan Danmarks Radio (DR) medvirker til at skabe en kollektiv erindringskultur gennem sin formidling af vikingetiden i dokumentarerne Historien om Danmark: Vikingetiden (2017) og Togtet (2023). Med afsæt i teorier om historiekultur, kollektiv erindring og national identitet (bl.a. Anette Warring, Bernard Eric Jensen og Jan Assmann) og med en medie- og public service-historisk kontekst placeres DR som aktiv aktør i forhandlinger om danskhed. Analysen af dokumentarernes fortællestrukturer, brug af eksperter, symbolske materialer, visuelle markører og iscenesættelser viser, at Historien om Danmark rammesætter vikingetiden som en lineær, samlende oprindelsesfortælling for nationen, mens Togtet aktualiserer perioden gennem oplevelsesbaserede rekonstruktioner og følelsesmæssigt engagement. Begge produktioner anvender sprog og billeder, der inviterer seerne ind i et fælles vi og gør vikingetiden til en symbolsk ressource for fælles identifikation. Specialet konkluderer, at DR ikke blot formidler historisk viden, men aktivt deltager i nutidens forhandling af dansk identitet og dermed fungerer som en central institution i produktionen af national historiekultur og kollektiv erindring.
This thesis examines how the Danish public broadcaster DR contributes to collective memory through its representation of the Viking Age in the documentaries Historien om Danmark: Vikingetiden (2017) and Togtet (2023). Drawing on theories of historical culture, collective memory, and national identity (notably Anette Warring, Bernard Eric Jensen, and Jan Assmann) and situating the analysis within Danish media history and public service obligations, the study positions DR as an active actor in negotiating Danishness. By analyzing narrative structures, the use of expert authority, symbolic materials, visual markers, and staged reenactments, the thesis finds that Historien om Danmark frames the Viking Age as a linear, cohesive national origin story, while Togtet revitalizes the period through experiential reconstruction and emotional engagement. Both productions employ language and imagery that invite viewers into a shared we, making the Viking Age a symbolic resource for collective identification. The study concludes that DR does not simply transmit historical information but actively participates in contemporary negotiations of national identity, serving as a key institution in the production of national historical culture and collective memory.
