Dette speciale undersøger den danske debat om Danmarks deltagelse ved VM i fodbold i Qatar 2022 gennem en kvalitativ, kritisk diskursanalyse med afsæt i Norman Faircloughs tilgang. Formålet er at identificere, hvordan forskellige diskurser og diskursordener former offentlig mening og relationen mellem det politiske og civilsamfundet. Analysen bygger på to hovedkilder: den officielle politiske positionering med fokus på daværende kulturminister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensens udtalelser, samt tv-programmet “Debatten: sluk for landsholdet?”, hvor civilsamfundsaktører diskuterer emnet. Studiet kortlægger en række centrale diskurser i den danske debat, herunder en kritisk protestdiskurs, en dialogdiskurs, en politisk interventionsdiskurs, en sportsetisk diskurs og en relativiserende diskurs. Det peger på en markant tavshed og undvigende linje i den politiske kommunikation, som har præget debatten, og fremhæver fraværet af qatarske institutioner og perspektiver i den danske offentlighed. Debatten kredser især om menneskerettighedskrænkelser, fodboldkultur, sportsetik, dobbeltmoral og refleksion, og viser, hvordan VM i Qatar udfordrer danske og vestlige værdier ved at placere Danmark og Vesten i kontrast til Qatar.
This thesis examines the Danish public debate on Denmark’s participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar using a qualitative, critical discourse analysis grounded in Norman Fairclough’s framework. The aim is to identify how discourses and discursive orders shape public opinion and the relationship between political actors and civil society. The analysis draws on two main sources: the official political positioning, focusing on statements by the then Minister of Culture Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen, and the TV program “Debatten: sluk for landsholdet?”, which features civil society actors discussing the topic. The study maps key discourses in the Danish debate, including a critical protest discourse, a dialogue discourse, a political intervention discourse, a sports ethics discourse, and a relativizing discourse. It highlights a notable silence and evasiveness in political communication that has influenced the debate, and underscores the absence of Qatari institutions and perspectives in the Danish public sphere. The discussion centers on human rights violations, football culture, sports ethics, double standards, and reflection, illustrating how the Qatar World Cup challenges Danish and Western values by positioning Denmark and the West in contrast to Qatar.
