Abstract
The hypothesis for this assignment is that by designing a task light for students in elementary schools, learning will be supported and it will help the students to focus and concentrate better in class. Therefore, the problem statement for this project has been: How can a task light be designed that both operates in a flexible classroom while improving the learning and lighting environment for the students? Based on a case study conducted around a full-scale experiment at Grøndalsvængets School in 2012, the implemented lighting facilities have been studied. This study has shed knowledge on various problems regarding lighting and learning in the implemented facilities, and which has formed the basis for an exploration of children’s need for light in the learning environment. Based on this collected knowledge, a task light has been designed and developed to function in the contemporary learning environment. To make the lamp as flexible as possible, it is powered by a battery and has a lighting system where the light intensity and the colour temperatures can be controlled individually by the student. Lighting can thus perform in accordance with the students’ own needs and preferences for lighting quality during their daily school activities and in line with the changing of seasons and the student’s different placement in the class. With the implementation of this lamp in the learning and lighting environment, there will be improved learning and environmental benefits for the student.
