Abstract

This study examines how online work affects employees’ social relationships and sense of social bonding, with a focus on coordination and productivity. The research draws on theories of employee communication, social relationships, online work, and coordination. It is based on a qualitative content analysis of five interviews conducted in Nepal and Denmark. The interview data were coded using six codes to structure the empirical analysis. The findings indicate that the COVID-19 lockdown and the shift to online work changed how employees relate to one another. Online work influenced social bonding among colleagues and their work performance, especially in terms of productivity. The study also observes differences between Nepal and Denmark in how social bonds and coworker friendships are maintained when work moves online.
