Specialet undersøger Egils saga gennem en teoretisk analyse og fortolkning af begreberne slægt, ære, kærlighed og magt. Med afsæt i fornyet interesse for islændingesagaerne placeres værket både som æstetisk autonom tekst og i sin historiske kontekst. Metodisk kombineres nykritisk nærlæsning med en historisk-filologisk tilgang med fokus på genre, sprog og stil, fortællerforhold og komposition; analysen suppleres af semantiske iagttagelser og psykologiske perspektiver inspireret af Freuds drømmeanalyse. Egil Skallagrimsson er analysens omdrejningspunkt, og læsningen følger sagaens kronologi fra fødsel til død. På denne baggrund belyses, hvordan slægten gennemgribende former individets identitet, hvordan en konflikt mellem storbondeslægt og kongeslægt strukturerer handlingen, hvordan æresidealet driver mange af Egils valg, hvordan kærlighedsskildringen er konfliktfyldt, og hvordan stræben efter og udøvelse af magt præger fortællingen. Relationerne mellem individ og slægt viser sig at gennemsyre og forbinde disse temaer.
This thesis examines Egils saga through a theoretical analysis and interpretation of the concepts of kinship, honor, love, and power. Motivated by renewed interest in the Icelandic sagas, the work is treated both as an autonomous literary text and within its historical context. Methodologically, it combines close reading in a New Critical vein with a historical-philological approach focused on genre, language and style, narrative perspective, and composition; the analysis is supplemented by semantic observations and psychological perspectives inspired by Freud's dream analysis. Egil Skallagrimsson is the focal point, and the reading follows the saga's chronology from birth to death. On this basis, the thesis explores how kinship profoundly shapes individual identity, how a conflict between a farmer lineage and the royal lineage structures the plot, how the ideal of honor motivates many of Egil's choices, how love is depicted as fraught and conflictual, and how the pursuit and exercise of power mark the narrative. The relations between individual and kin are shown to permeate and link these themes.
