Abstract
As of lately, there has been an increasing focus on music and culture institutions in Denmark. The Danish government wants the institutions to cater to a wider demographic than they currently do. The following study deals with an examination of what kind of education is offered to the student of the Danish music and culture institutions, and whether they comply with the announcements uttered by the Minister of Culture and the governments wishes. Furthermore, this study also conducts an examination of whether the student’s wishes are reflected in the lessons they receive. To help us in examining this topic, we have conducted a series of interviews. The statements given by the respondents are put into context of existing theories about learning, motivation and didactics. The results of the analysis regarding how the music- and culture institutions accommodate the student wishes showed that the students value the fact that they are able to have an opinion on, what they are taught, highly. It also showed that the students value social activities highly, both as a source of learning and as a way to keep their interest in music education. The results of the analysis regarding how the managers responded to the announcing of the national goal regarding a broader music education showed that the managers already spend resources on a broader music education. It also showed that the managers express a certain amount of scepticism towards the government’s intentions behind the new national goal. Furthermore, neither of the managers felt that the national goal was situated in the reality that they observe on a daily basis.
