Abstract

Digital twins have become a promising technology for improving the efficiency, quality, and sustainability in the building sector. This thesis presents a systematic literature review of digital twins in construction, where the focus is on defining clear standards and properties for digital twins to enhance project quality and sustain-ability. The study identifies a need for a more holistic approach to digital win technology, with a focus on adapting digital twins to specific and changing requirements in construction projects. The thesis also highlights the challenges that are associated with implementing digital twins in the building sector, including the need to define when a digital twin becomes a digital twin. In addition, the thesis presents a suggestion for a method for defining standards and properties based on a combination of existing knowledge and analysis to achieve a deeper understanding of the issues surrounding digital twins in construction. The results of this study can be used to enable the implementation of digital twin technology in future construction projects with sustainabil-ity as the central focus. However, it is important to recognize that digital twins are not a universal solution for all challenges in the construction industry and that their use should be carefully evaluated in the context of specific project phases, project type and type of challenges.
