Abstract
This project explores improving a pump-driven hydraulic actuator for a winch by removing the conventional tank. The tank supplies hydraulic oil to the pump but is expensive to manufacture and often much larger than the actuator, which is impractical. As a compact alternative, the project investigates a bootstrap cylinder in which one chamber is connected in the same way as the former tank and the other chamber is connected to the pump outlet. With this configuration, the actuator becomes a self-contained system that does not need an external tank. The objective is to determine the physical dimensions of the bootstrap cylinder so that its integration does not impair the winch drive’s dynamic performance.
