Abstract
This project concerns the improvement of a pump driven hydraulic actuator system for a winch drive regarding the tank. A conventional tank is a required part of the complete system in order to have hydraulic oil available for the pump. The tank, however, is a rather expensive device with respect to manufacturing and also it is usually much bigger than the hydraulic actuator itself. Thus, from an economical as well as a practical perspective, there is an aspiration of being able to exclude the tank and finding an alternative. A proposed candidate for this is a bootstrap cylinder, in which one chamber is connected in the same manner as the conventional tank was connected while the other chamber is connected to the outlet of the pump. With such configuration, the hydraulic actuator is then categorized as a self-contained system. The objective is then to design the bootstrap cylinder with respect to its physical dimensions, where it must be ensured that its presence in the system does not impair the dynamic performance of the winch drive.
