Abstract
Formålet med specialet er at forstå, hvordan kontanthjælpsmodtagere fortæller om det danske beskæftigelsessystem, og hvordan mødet med systemet kan påvirke deres identitet. Datamaterialet bygger på narrative interviews med fem kontanthjælpsmodtagere samt observation og lydoptagelser af samtaler mellem kontanthjælpsmodtagere og en sagsbehandler. Analysen tager udgangspunkt i Jerome Bruner og Marianne Horsdals teorier om fortællinger, og hvordan mennesker bruger historier til at forstå deres hverdag. Marvin B. Scott og Stanford M. Lymans teori om begrundelser og undskyldninger inddrages kort. Fortællingerne om beskæftigelsessystemet er overvejende negative, men der nævnes enkelte positive erfaringer, blandt andet en mentor og en lærer, som havde en god betydning for to af deltagerne. Mødet med systemet synes at have påvirket deltagernes identitet i forskellig grad. En mandlig deltager er blevet mere skeptisk gennem sine år i systemet og har ikke tydelige planer for fremtiden. Specialet giver et lille indblik i, hvordan fem kontanthjælpsmodtagere oplever det danske beskæftigelsessystem, og hvordan dette kan have påvirket deres identitet.
This thesis examines how cash benefit recipients describe the Danish employment system and how interactions with the system may influence their identity. The data come from narrative interviews with five recipients, along with observation and audio recordings of conversations between recipients and a caseworker. The analysis uses Jerome Bruner and Marianne Horsdal’s theories on narratives and how people use stories to make sense of everyday life. Marvin B. Scott and Stanford M. Lyman’s theory on justifications and excuses is briefly applied. The recipients’ stories about the employment system are mostly negative, with a few positive experiences, such as a mentor and a teacher who had a good impact on two participants. Interactions with the system appear to affect identity to varying degrees. One male participant has become more skeptical during his years in the system and does not have clear plans for the future. The thesis offers a small insight into how five cash benefit recipients experience the Danish employment system and how this may have influenced their identities.
