Abstract
This thesis seeks to explore the ideal of cosmopolitanism as a philosophical concept in relation to the notion of Bildung. The focus will be on the connection between cosmopolitanism and Bildung in relation to the primary school in Denmark, particularly through a philosophical analysis of these concepts as applied to elementary education in Denmark. The goal is to integrate these elements in an analysis to promote the idea of cosmopolitanism as a contributor to Bildung as a concept in primary schools. The thesis partly addresses political decision-making processes related to the primary schools but rather focuses on cosmopolitanism as an ideal and Bildung as a concept. To this end, selected theoretical perspectives, which are relevant to this context are used. Cosmopolitanism is analyzed through Stoic thinkers, Immanuel Kant, an enlightenment thinker, and Wilhelm von Humboldt, who offers a practice-oriented perspective for the individual. The seminal section on Bildung discusses John Dewey's views on education experience, and sociality in relation to the topic. Furthermore, the thesis explores how the concept of cosmopolitanism can be integrated into an educational context. The main research question is: How can the concept of cosmopolitanism contribute to the educational ideal in primary schools?
