Abstract

This thesis aims to explore the contents and accessibility of archival versions of Danish public sector database systems and lay the foundation for further research in the field. I have examined the structure, content and documentation for three archival versions of a municipal system used in the care of elderly and disabled citizens, preserved at the Aalborg City Archives. Due to the exploratory nature of the study, the results are mixed. I have found that the documentation necessary to interpret the contents of the databases is generally good, but minimal. Due to the Danish preservation strategy, the structure, or original order, of the digital material is largely preserved, save for minor compromises in the early end migrated instances due to technical limitations set by the preservation requirements. The databases also contain a wealth of other information about the municipal administration of care for the elderly and disabled that has yet to be examined. This study leaves many questions open to further re-search, particularly about the structure and accessibility of the material.
