Afhandlingen undersøger, hvilken rolle Bornholms Lufthavn kan spille i et øsamfund præget af faldende befolkningstal, lav produktivitet og potentielle arbejdskraftudfordringer. Som statsejet lufthavn med forpligtelser til offentlig service, sikkerhed, militære behov og lokale interesser analyseres lufthavnens muligheder for at understøtte øens udvikling med fokus på tre segmenter: pendling, turisme og tilflyttere. Metodisk kombineres kvantitative analyser (bl.a. økonomi, PESTEL og SWOT samt et Value Blueprint- og økosystemperspektiv) med en kvalitativ tilgang, herunder konstruktivistisk tolkede interviews med nøgleaktører på Bornholm. Hovedresultatet peger på, at lufthavnen kan få en mere aktiv, faciliterende rolle i at samle centrale parter (passagerforening, kommune, folketingsmedlemmer og flyselskaber) og skabe meningsdannelse om løsninger. For pendling er de centrale udfordringer befordringsfradrag og billetpriser, som kræver fælles indsats. For turisme er der et betydeligt vækstpotentiale gennem partnerskaber mellem lufthavnen, turismeerhvervet og flyselskaber – herunder opsøgende kontakt til selskaber i Polen og Tyskland – og ved at fortælle de gode historier om ”solskinsøen”. Tværgående fremhæves tidsfaktoren som afgørende, især for pendlere: lufthavnen bør påvirke leverandører og processer (f.eks. sikkerhed, parkering) for at reducere passagerernes gennemløbstid. I forhold til tilflyttere er mobilitet en nøgle, og lufthavnen kan sammen med kommunen synliggøre den korte ”luftbro” til hovedstaden på ca. 25 minutter. Samlet viser afhandlingen, at lufthavnen kan bidrage til lokal omstilling ved at facilitere samarbejde, styrke tilgængelighed og effektivitet og målrette indsatsen mod pendling, turisme og tilflytning.

This thesis examines the role Bornholm Airport can play in an island community facing population decline, low productivity and potential labor shortages. As a government-owned airport bound by public service obligations—including security, military needs and local requirements—the study explores how the airport can support regional development across three focal segments: commuting, tourism and newcomers. The methodology combines quantitative analyses (economy, PESTEL and SWOT, plus a Value Blueprint and ecosystem perspective) with a qualitative, constructivist approach based on interviews with key stakeholders on Bornholm. The main finding is that the airport can take a more active, facilitating role by convening stakeholders (passenger associations, the municipality, members of Parliament and airlines) to build shared understanding and solutions. For commuting, travel tax deductions and airline pricing are core challenges that demand joint action. Tourism presents a major growth opportunity through partnerships between the airport, the tourism industry and carriers—including outreach to airlines in Poland and Germany—and by promoting compelling narratives about the “sunny island.” Time is a cross-cutting factor, especially for commuters: the airport should influence suppliers and processes (e.g., security, parking) to reduce passenger processing time. For newcomers, mobility is key, and the airport can, together with the municipality, highlight the short “air bridge” to the capital of about 25 minutes. Overall, the thesis shows the airport can help catalyze local change by facilitating collaboration, strengthening accessibility and efficiency, and focusing efforts on commuting, tourism and in-migration.
