Der er ofte forskel på, hvordan borgere og sundhedsprofessionelle vurderer akut sygdom. Mange kontakter til sundhedsvæsenet uden for almindelig åbningstid (out-of-hours) vurderes af sundhedsprofessionelle som uhensigtsmæssige. Borgernes brug af out-of-hours påvirkes af flere forhold, blandt andet hvordan den alment praktiserende læge er organiseret, og hvor let det er at få kontakt. Bekymring og usikkerhed om at vurdere symptomer spiller også en væsentlig rolle. Forskning fremhæver, at kontinuitet i behandlingen er vigtig for borgerne, og øget brug af out-of-hours kan forstyrre denne kontinuitet.

There are often differences between how members of the public and health professionals assess acute illness. Many contacts with the health system outside normal opening hours (out-of-hours) are judged by health professionals to be inappropriate. People’s use of out-of-hours services is influenced by several factors, including how general practice is organized and how accessible the GP is. Worry and difficulty judging symptoms also play a significant role. Research emphasizes that continuity of care is important, and increased use of out-of-hours services can disrupt this continuity.
