Abstract

Offender reintegration with a trauma-informed and body-centered approach represents a relatively new field of research. Drawing on qualitative interviews with former offenders, reintegration counsel¬lors, psychologists, and body-oriented therapists at the Unit for Criminal Preventive Inter-ventions (Enheden for Kriminalpræventive Indsatser, EKI) within the Municipality of Copenhagen, this thesis investigates whether body-oriented therapy, as a trauma-informed therapeutic approach, yields offen¬der reintegrative effects and, if so, how these effects may contribute to enhancing other practices in offender reintegration. The study shows that body-oriented therapy can support reintegration on several levels. Specifically, the therapy appears to exert a stabilizing effect by regulating an over¬stimulated nervous system, thereby creating a window of opportunity for engagement with and potential benefit from cognitive behavioral therapy offered by EKI. Moreover, the therapy partially fa¬ci¬li¬tates increased bodily awareness, which in turn enhances self-regulation and enables former offenders to identify and manage challenging emotional situations without resorting to maladaptive behaviors such as substance abuse, anger, or avoidance strategies. These effects can be seen as contributing to an identity transformation, in which individuals construct a new pro-social narrative about them¬selves, characterized by enhanced self-esteem, agency, and meaning. Conse¬quently, body-oriented the¬rapy may serve as a facilitating factor in a desistance process, provided that certain conditions are met.
