Specialet undersøger relationen mellem Nordisk Film Biografer og danske unge i alderen 15–20 år i en hverdag præget af sociale medier og streaming. Udgangspunktet er et eksplorativt casestudie knyttet til initiativet “Hack To The Future”, hvor vi kombinerer kvalitative fokusgrupper med unge med inddragelse af sekundære, kvantitative kilder fra bl.a. DR, Danmarks Statistik og Det Danske Filminstitut. Med afsæt i Stig Hjarvards medialiseringsteori belyses biografens rolle som kulturinstitution i et medialiseret samfund, og med Manuel Castells’ netværkssamfund placeres de unges mediebrug i relation til biografkulturen. Analysen peger på, at nye medier i væsentlig grad former unges forståelse og brug af biografen, men at biografen fortsat har kulturel betydning. Specialet anbefaler at se biografen som en samlet oplevelse, der differentierer sig fra andre tilbud, frem for primært at betragte streaming som en trussel.

This thesis explores the relationship between Nordisk Film Cinemas and Danish youth aged 15–20 in an everyday life shaped by social media and streaming. It is based on an explorative case study linked to the “Hack To The Future” initiative, combining qualitative focus groups with young respondents and secondary quantitative sources from organizations such as DR, Statistics Denmark, and the Danish Film Institute. Drawing on Stig Hjarvard’s mediatization theory, the study examines the cinema’s role as a cultural institution, and uses Manuel Castells’ network society to connect youth media practices to cinema culture. The analysis indicates that new media significantly shape how young people understand and use the cinema, while the cinema still retains cultural relevance. The thesis proposes reframing the cinema as an experience that differentiates itself from competing offerings rather than focusing primarily on streaming as a threat.
