Abstract

The purpose for this master thesis is to explore how non-biological mothers in planned lesbian families experiences motherhood in a heteronormative society. An existentialistic phenomenological-hermeneutic approach guides this master thesis, inspired by Heidegger and Gadamer. The existing qualitative research in this field is presented through a systematic review, giving insights into the multifaceted experi-ences of being a non-biological lesbian mother. Hereafter, the qualitative method used throughout the project is accounted for, including description of method of data collection, interview and transcription process, and presentation of the six stages of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Ethical considerations are men-tioned, focusing on reflections of confidentiality, my role and impact as a scientist, and the possible consequences hereby. An overview of historical aspects regarding the development of the Danish society’s’ accept and acknowledgement of diverse forms of family, hereunder LGBT+ families, is presented. Thereafter is an unfolding of this master thesis theoretical concepts, fo-cusing on two areas: lesbian motherhood, choice of donor and the role of the non-biological mother and the related biological and legal challenges. The second part presents a theoretical perspective on heteronormativity in society, including theorists such as Rikke Andreassens (2019) “just great” repertoire, Axel Honneths (2003) the-ory of recognition and critical look on the power structures in society, and finally Erving Goffmans (2009) concept of deviance from the norm through social categoriz-ing and stigmatization. Thereafter, an analysis of this master thesis’ four informants experiences is conducted and explained, based on the theoretical foundation mentioned above. The analysis is built around themes from the interviews with the use of the analytic method IPA, where three main themes and seven subthemes were found. The main themes were: What constitutes “family”?; Legislation and legal rights; Stigmatization and heter-onormativity. All this leads to a discussion divided into two main parts. The first part focuses on a discussion of the findings of this master thesis’ analysis in comparison to previous research on the subject, and if these findings supplement or contradict one another. The second part of the discussion focuses on the contributions and limita-tions of this master thesis, explained through the concepts of reliability, validity and generalizability. It is concluded that this master thesis contributes to the existing research with an in-sight into the experiences of being a non-biological lesbian mother in a heteronorma-tive world. Suggestions are made for further research to focus on implications for clinical practice, experiences of other sexual minority parents, and a discursive look into the heteronormative rhetorics of society and its influence on the living conditions of LGBT+ parents and families.
