Abstract

This assignment is about young people and substance addiction. The topic of this assignment is to examine the increased risk of substance abuse among young boys with ADHD, and about what social work methods that best support the young boys with ADHD in reducing the substance abuse. The bachelor project is based on existing research that can discover the connection between ADHD diagnosis and also the high risk of self-medication, that follows. The project includes the use of qualitative and quantitative approach, through interviews with informants, which is an employee at the drug section and also with a young person with a ADHD diagnosis, who himself has been in a drug addiction. We are also reviewing the literature, the psychological, social, and environmental factors contributing to substance addiction. The analysis through the project indicates that young boys with ADHD, have several factors that can explain why there is a high risk of substance abuse among young boys with ADHD. The lack of time to investigate an ADHD diagnosis means that young people with ADHD cannot be consulted within the time frame where it is expected that you must be consulted. This factor contributes to many young people not getting their diagnosis and therefore doesn't get the necessary help. The structure is important for the young boys, as they often can't find a structure themselves. And for the boys who have ADHD, the structure is crucial for them to find to be able to function in the society. In relation to the social methods that the social worker should use with the treatment of the young boys. More involvement of caregivers around the young boys, as well as making the young people aware of the risks of using drugs. The social worker should work holistically and create solutions where the young boys' needs are included in the treatment. Network involvement and the use of motivational interviews must be essential in working with the young boys. Also the use of this is a decisive factor in wanting the young boys to get out of the substance addiction and try other alternatives to the abuse. This concludes that by using targeted interventions which focuses on the psychological and social aspect of young boys with ADHD, can reduce the risk of substance addiction, and also make better opportunities for the boys to create a life without abuse and thus create a better everyday life, where they can live normally with their diagnosis.
