Specialet undersøger, hvordan angst kan forstås sociologisk i en samtid præget af stigende mistrivsel, højere stressniveauer og flere angstdiagnoser, særligt i en dansk kontekst. Med udgangspunkt i Hartmut Rosas kritiske teori om resonans, fremmedgørelse og dynamisk stabilisering udvikles og diskuteres et sociologisk angstbegreb, der forener subjektive erfaringer med strukturelle forklaringer. Tilgangen er teoretisk og begrebsanalytisk: Specialet gennemgår Rosas angstmodel og placerer den i forhold til sociologiske traditioner om sociale patologier og følelsers sociologi, samtidig med at begreberne kritisk vurderes. Hovedargumentet er, at modernitetens strukturelle logik om dynamisk stabilisering systematisk frembringer angst, sådan at det moderne subjekt i udgangspunktet er underlagt en form for grundangst. På det normative plan anvendes resonansbegrebet som pejlemærke for mulige veje til at mindske angst, med eksemplificerende diskussioner af rationaliseringen af uddannelsessektoren og af klimaangst. Trods påpegede svagheder konkluderes det, at Rosas angstbegreb er overbevisende og frugtbart som grundlag for videre kritisk sociologisk teori og analyse, og specialet foreslår en bred definition af angst som en negativ subjektiv følelse, der socialt struktureres af den institutionelle logik om dynamisk stabilisering.
This thesis explores how anxiety can be understood sociologically in a context marked by rising distress, higher stress levels, and increasing anxiety diagnoses, particularly in Denmark. Drawing on Hartmut Rosa’s critical theory of resonance, alienation, and dynamic stabilization, it develops and discusses a sociological concept of anxiety that links subjective experience with structural conditions. The approach is theoretical and conceptual: the thesis examines Rosa’s anxiety model and situates it within sociological work on social pathologies and the sociology of emotions, while offering a critical assessment of his concepts. The central argument is that the structural logic of modernity—dynamic stabilization—systematically produces anxiety, such that the modern subject is inherently exposed to a basic form of anxiety. Normatively, the thesis uses resonance as a compass for how institutions might reduce anxiety, with illustrative discussions of the rationalization of the education sector and of climate anxiety. Despite identified shortcomings, it concludes that Rosa’s concept of anxiety is convincing and fertile for further critical sociological theory and research, and it proposes a broad definition of anxiety as a negative subjective emotion that is socially structured by the institutional logic of dynamic stabilization.
