Afhandlingen undersøger Activity Based Costing (ABC) med fokus på, om metoden er et anvendeligt alternativ i praksis, og hvor tilgængelig den reelt er for virksomheder. Udgangspunktet er det øgede behov for præcise omkostningsinformationer siden 1970’erne og den efterfølgende udvikling af ABC som svar på begrænsningerne ved traditionelle fordelingsmetoder. Gennem en gennemgang af centrale modeller (bl.a. Kaplan og Cooper) samt eksisterende forsknings- og praksislitteratur analyseres ABC’s principper, udbredelse, diffusion og implementering, herunder typiske succesfaktorer og barrierer. Afhandlingen samler evidens om fordele og omkostninger ved at indføre ABC og drøfter, hvordan organisatoriske forhold, datakrav og implementeringsvalg påvirker, om metoden skaber værdi. På den baggrund gives en afbalanceret vurdering af ABC’s praktiske anvendelighed og de betingelser, der øger sandsynligheden for en vellykket anvendelse, uden at konkludere endeligt ud over det, som den tilgængelige dokumentation kan understøtte.
This thesis examines Activity Based Costing (ABC) with the aim of assessing whether it is a viable alternative in practice and how accessible it truly is for organizations. It frames ABC in the context of the increased demand for accurate cost information since the 1970s and ABC’s emergence as a response to limitations in traditional costing. Drawing on core models (e.g., Kaplan and Cooper) and a review of existing research and practitioner literature, the thesis analyzes ABC’s principles, diffusion and implementation, including common success factors and barriers. It synthesizes evidence on the benefits and costs of adopting ABC and discusses how organizational conditions, data requirements, and implementation choices influence whether the method delivers value. The result is a balanced appraisal of ABC’s practical applicability and the conditions that increase the likelihood of successful use, without inferring conclusions beyond what the available evidence supports.
