Specialet undersøger udviklingen af monumenter i Aalborg fra 1816 til 1937 med særligt fokus på, hvilken betydning syv statuer har haft for byens samfundsmæssige udvikling. Gennem casestudier af Moltke-støtten, Schleppegrell-statuen, Christian IX’s rytterstatue, Skipper Clement-statuen samt de tre virksomhedsgaver By og Land (Cementfabrikkerne), Cimbertyren (De Danske Spritfabrikker) og Pigen med Gåsen (C.W. Obel) analyseres tilblivelse, udformning, placering, initiativtagere, offentlige debatter og indvielsesritualer. Arbejdet kombinerer lokalhistorie, kunsthistorie og erindringsteori og bygger på både lokale og nationale aviser samt værker som Aalborgs Historie, Danmarks Historie, Ny Dansk Kunsthistorie og oversigter over skulptur i det fri; ved Christian IX behandles også billed- og filmmateriale. Specialet sætter monumenterne ind i samtidens politiske og kulturelle rammer, herunder kommunalreformer, valgret og byrådets rolle, for at belyse, hvordan de blev brugt og forstået i offentligheden. This thesis explores the development of monuments in Aalborg from 1816 to 1937, focusing on the significance of seven statues in the city’s societal development. Through case studies of the Moltke memorial, the Schleppegrell statue, the equestrian statue of Christian IX, the Skipper Clement statue, and three corporate donations—By og Land (the Cement Factories), the Cimbrian Bull (De Danske Spritfabrikker), and The Girl with the Goose (C.W. Obel)—it examines creation processes, form and placement, commissioning actors, public debate, and inauguration ceremonies. The study combines local history, art history, and memory theory and draws on local and national newspapers alongside works such as Aalborgs Historie, Danmarks Historie, Ny Dansk Kunsthistorie, and surveys of public sculpture; for Christian IX, image and film sources are also considered. By situating the monuments within contemporary political and cultural contexts, including municipal reforms, suffrage, and the city council’s role, the thesis investigates how they were used and interpreted in public life.
