Abstract
This thesis examines the opportunities and barriers ex-Muslims experience in establishing a new identity. The study is based on qualitative interviews with ex-Muslims, seeking insight into the identity work and identity search processes ex-Muslims experience in connection with their decay process and the establishment of a new identity The study's findings show that leaving Islam is typically associated with long-term identity work, as the Muslim identity marker is based on a collective community with a deep-rooted norm in which it is considered taboo to leave Islam. The consequences of this are that apostasy is often a lengthy process for the individual, who encounters resistance in both his own habitus, but especially in relation to the reactions of the surroundings. Therefore, many choose to hide their apostasy and live a double life, which can lead to dissatisfaction. According to the study, the ex-Muslims who come out more or less publicly with their apostasy are often stigmatized and often experience having to defend their choices in their encounter with their surroundings.
