Abstract

By studying how the December Hurricane of 1999 affected the environmental discourse in select Danish newspapers from 1999-2009 this thesis seeks to study how extreme weather events have affected the public environmental discourse in Denmark. To study this, this thesis employed the use of environmental discourse analysis to analyse the environmental discourses in the newspa-pers: Politiken, Berlingske Tidende, Jyllands-Posten and Information from 1999 to 2009. Fur-thermore, a study of the newspaper’s ability to create memory anchors and collective prospective memory has also been studied to determine the impact of the hurricane on public discourse. The resulting analysis determined that the dominating environmental discourses employed by Danish newspapers in the portrayal of the hurricane was the problem-solving discourses though the pro-methean and survivalist discourses were in the majority in respectively Jyllands-Posten and In-formation. The use of the hurricane waned over time and mostly disappeared from the public dis-course at the end of the chosen period. This coupled with the fact that the newspapers didn’t man-age to establish the elements that creates memory anchoring decoupled the hurricane from the environmental discord and have led to the conclusion that the environmental discourse in the newspapers weren’t affected by the hurricane.
