Abstract
This thesis examines how to benchmark sustainability, using the food sector as an example. The aim is to create a feasible and practical method that companies can apply. It begins with a review of six existing tools to show why they do not provide a solution that is at once feasible, comprehensive, and easy to use. The tools analyzed include the Dow Jones Sustainable Indexes, the Global 100 Most Sustainable Companies, and approaches developed by Graafland et al., Yakovieva et al., Green Research, and the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence. Based on this critique, the thesis introduces a new benchmarking method designed to address these gaps. The method adopts Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) key performance indicators (KPIs), which streamline data collection and help make the assessment both comprehensive and simple to use. It also considers not only sustainability initiatives but also companies’ commitments and goals.
