Abstract
This thesis starts from a frustration with how urban and land development is commonly done today and seeks to challenge that mindset. Aiming to show how development can better respect nature, it presents a design proposal called A Better, Greener Tomorrow for the island of Egholm in the Limfjord between Aalborg and Nørresundby in Northern Jutland. The proposal is offered as an alternative to the suggested highway across the island. In the early phase, the project uses a framework of utopian thinking—stepping back from current debates to explore the island’s potentials in an idealized scenario. This helped the work look at Egholm with fresh eyes. Nature was identified as the island’s main strength and was made the first priority and guiding principle throughout the iterative, step-by-step design process. The proposal is developed at two scales: Egholm Nature Park and Øbyen. Both are shaped by the idea of intertwining people and nature and restoring balance between them. Together, they illustrate how contemporary development can be rethought by placing nature and sustainability at the core, opening up alternative ways of living and a better future.

Med ambitionen om at vise, hvordan udvikling kan ske med større respekt for naturen, præsenterer specialet designforslaget A Better, Greener Tomorrow for øen Egholm i Limfjorden mellem Aalborg og Nørresundby i Nordjylland. Forslaget er tænkt som et alternativ til de foreslåede motorvejsplaner hen over øen. I projektets første fase bruges en ramme af utopisk tænkning – det vil sige at træde et skridt tilbage fra den aktuelle debat og undersøge, hvordan øens potentialer kunne udfolde sig i et ideelt scenarie. Denne tilgang gjorde det muligt at se på Egholm med friske øjne. Naturen blev identificeret som øens stærkeste potentiale og blev derfor gjort til førsteprioritet og styrende princip gennem hele den trinvise designproces.
