This report is the result of a research made during an internship at IVM. The aim of the research is mapping the institutional architecture of global ocean governance.
The report focuses on institutions working on targets of the SDG14 in a global scale, gathering some specific information about those institutions and analyzing them.
Problem formulation: Which is the current institutional situation in global ocean governance? Which are the institution involved in ocean governance? Which kind of institutions are they?
Results: There is a total of 57 institutions in the obtained database. Visualizing the gathered institutions in the governance triangle, there is a public-led governance scheme. This is explained by the importance that the UN acquires in ocean governance. Analyzing the year of initiation, it is remarkable the presence of institutions after the 90s, which is the decade that UNCLOS and other important conventions came into force. It is also worth mentioning that the biggest amount of institutions have conservation as their main concern. This research can conclude a potential institutional fragmentation in ocean governance.
